How to Prepare Yerba Mate Traditionally

Yerba Mate is more than a drink — it is a ritual that has connected people across South America for generations. While there are many ways to enjoy mate, the traditional preparation method remains the most authentic and rewarding experience.

Follow these simple steps to prepare yerba mate the traditional way.

🧉 Step 1: Fill Your Mate Cup

Fill approximately two-thirds (â…”) of your mate gourd or cup with yerba mate leaves.

This amount allows the leaves to expand gradually while providing multiple refills throughout the session.

🧉 Step 2: Create the Slope

Cover the top of the cup with your hand, turn it upside down briefly, and gently shake.

Tilt the cup so the leaves gather on one side, creating a natural slope and leaving an open space on the other side.

This traditional technique helps preserve flavor and improves the overall drinking experience.

🧉 Step 3: Moisten the Leaves

Pour a small amount of cool or lukewarm water into the empty side of the cup.

Allow the leaves to absorb the moisture for a few moments.

This step helps protect the yerba mate from sudden heat exposure and contributes to a smoother flavor profile.

🧉 Step 4: Insert the Bombilla

Place the bombilla (metal straw) into the moistened side of the cup.

Once inserted, try not to move it frequently, as this helps maintain the structure of the leaves and prevents clogging.

🧉 Step 5: Add Hot Water

Slowly pour hot water into the same moistened area.

For the best flavor, use water between 70–80°C (160–175°F).

Avoid boiling water, as excessive heat may create a bitter taste and reduce the enjoyment of the mate.

🧉 Step 6: Sip and Enjoy

Drink through the bombilla and enjoy the rich, earthy character of yerba mate.

You can continue refilling the cup with hot water multiple times until the leaves gradually lose their flavor.

🌿 Optional Additions

Many people enjoy customizing their mate with:

• Honey
• Natural sugar
• Mint leaves
• Lemon peel
• Ginger
• Other aromatic herbs

Each addition creates a unique experience while preserving the spirit of traditional mate culture.

✨ Traditional Mate Tips

• Never use boiling water.
• Refill the mate several times before replacing the leaves.
