How to Prepare Yerba Mate the Traditional Way
Share
centuries in South America and is now part of daily life for many around the world. Preparing it the right way makes all the difference in flavor and experience. Here’s a step-by-step guide:
1. Fill the cup
Fill about ⅔ of your mate gourd or cup with dried yerba mate leaves.
2. Tilt the cup
Tilt the cup slightly so the leaves rest on one side, leaving an empty space on the other side. This creates a natural slope for pouring water.
3. Moisten the leaves
Pour a small amount of cool or lukewarm water into the empty side to moisten the leaves. This protects them from burning when you add hot water, and keeps the flavor smooth.
4. Insert the bombilla
Place the metal straw (bombilla) into the moistened side and leave it there. Try not to move it once it’s in place.
5. Add hot water
Carefully pour in hot (not boiling) water, ideally between 70–80°C (160–175°F). Always pour the water onto the moistened side.
6. Sip and enjoy
Drink through the bombilla and enjoy your mate. Feel free to add honey, natural sugar, or herbs like mint or ginger for extra flavor.
