How to Prepare Yerba Mate

You need loose-leaf yerba mate, a mate cup, a bombilla, and drinking water. A thermos makes repeated refills convenient.

Make your first traditional mate

1. Rinse new drinkware before use. Fill the cup about halfway to two-thirds with yerba, leaving space for water.
2. Tilt the cup to gather the leaves on one side.
3. Pour a little cool or lukewarm water into the lower, open side. Let it absorb briefly.
4. Insert the bombilla into that moistened area.
5. Add hot water to the same area. Water around 158–176°F (70–80°C) is a practical brewing starting point; avoid boiling water.
6. Let the drink cool to a comfortable sipping temperature. Sip and refill the wet area until the flavor fades.

Keep the bombilla in place

Stirring moves small particles toward the filter and can cause clogs. If the draw is difficult, empty the cup and clean the bombilla before trying again.

Start smaller if you prefer

A traditional cup can use much more yerba than a filtered mug. For a lighter introduction, follow the French press method. Brew strength is not a measured caffeine dose.

After your session

Discard used leaves and wash the cup and bombilla. Do not leave damp yerba in the cup overnight. Follow the care guide.
