How to Make Yerba Mate in a Coffee Maker
ALLUBI Editorial TeamSome drip coffee makers can make a filtered yerba mate infusion. Check your appliance manual first: use yerba only if the manufacturer allows loose herbal infusions.
Use the filter basket, never the tank
- Clean the basket and carafe to reduce leftover coffee flavor.
- Fit the recommended paper filter in the basket.
- For a light trial, use about 1–2 teaspoons of yerba per 8 fl oz (240 mL) of water. Leave generous room in the basket for the leaves to swell.
- Add only plain drinking water to the reservoir and run the permitted brewing cycle.
- Let the drink cool before sipping. Adjust the yerba amount next time to suit your taste.
When to use a different method
Do not put loose yerba in a grinder, capsule system, espresso portafilter, or water reservoir. If the manual does not permit herbal infusions, use a French press or a tea infuser instead. Stop if the basket drains slowly; do not pack it tightly.
Will it taste like traditional mate?
A drip brew is a filtered mug rather than a cup repeatedly refilled through a bombilla. The temperature and extraction depend on the machine, so the flavor may differ. A fixed spoon measurement does not establish caffeine content.
