What Is Yerba Mate?

ALLUBI Editorial Team

Yerba mate (pronounced roughly “YEHR-bah MAH-teh”) is a South American infusion made from the dried leaves and stems of the plant Ilex paraguariensis. It naturally contains caffeine. The drink is also called mate; the dry leaves are the yerba.

What does it taste like?

Expect a grassy, earthy flavor with noticeable bitterness. Strength depends on the amount of yerba, the water temperature, and brewing time. Start with a lighter brew if you are used to sweet bottled drinks.

A drink with a shared tradition

Mate has roots in Indigenous Guaraní traditions and is widely enjoyed in Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, and beyond. ALLUBI’s loose-leaf mate comes from Paraguay. Con palo means the blend includes stems along with leaves.

How do you drink it?

Traditionally, a cup is filled with yerba and repeatedly topped up with water. A bombilla is a metal straw with a filter. You can also make a filtered infusion in a French press and drink it from a regular mug.

Where should a beginner start?

Pick a beginner-friendly method and a small bag. You do not need to replace your coffee routine all at once. Yerba mate is a caffeinated beverage, not a treatment or a promise of a particular energy experience.

Try ALLUBI Yerba Mate 250g, or choose the starter set with a cup and bombilla.
