How to Make Yerba Mate with a French Press
ALLUBI Editorial TeamA French press is an easy way to try loose-leaf mate without a traditional cup or bombilla. The leaves steep in water, then the filter separates them from your drink.
A light starting recipe
For one 8 fl oz (240 mL) mug, try 1–2 teaspoons of yerba. This is a taste-based starting recipe, not a tested caffeine serving.
- Use a clean French press and add the yerba.
- Add water around 158–176°F (70–80°C).
- Steep for about 3–5 minutes, adjusting the time to your taste.
- Press slowly without forcing the plunger.
- Pour into a mug and allow it to cool comfortably. If fine particles remain, pour through a fine strainer.
Adjust one thing at a time
For a lighter flavor, shorten the steep or use less yerba. For more intensity, gradually increase the amount. You can add lemon, mint, or a little sweetener after tasting the plain brew.
Do I need extra accessories?
Your French press and mug are enough. The 250g bag is a convenient first purchase. For another method, read the coffee maker guide.
